What good works must I do to have eternal life? How do I get to heaven? These questions though important, not many are concerned about it these days. Mostly because, not many understand that there is more to life than just living or should I say surviving Planet Earth for some 80 to 100 years. So we work hard, work two jobs, overtime , invest, save money for the future, have multiple medical insurance policies in case we find ourselves fighting some deadly disease or emergency, and everybody is trying to ensure that they leave behind enough wealth that will help support their loved ones after they have gone.

All along, we try to do works that give us some sort of consolation that we are doing some good towards the society with the expectation that good will be done unto us in return someday or somehow help us find a way into a happy or rather peaceful after life. So we donate to charity, support orphans and the elderly, make donations for the less privileged of our society and so on.

I am not here today to criticize these actions. I believe they are important. In fact, the bible encourages us to work hard, invest money, save it, use it wisely, support them who don’t have enough and earn wealth honestly that we can leave behind an inheritance not just for one generation but for generations to come.

For the benefit of those who are earnestly searching any answer to the question we started off with, “What good deed must I do to have eternal life?” I want to say this: Good works alone have not and will never take anyone to heaven. (Click to Tweet)

How do I know this? Because the Bible says so!

Once a young rich man came to Jesus and asked Him the same question, “Good teacher, what good deed must I do to have eternal life? Matthew 19:16-22

Jesus answered Him saying, “Obey the commandments.” But the young man asked what good works he could do to attain eternal life? And Jesus disregarded good works when He turned his focus to obeying the commandments. What Jesus was saying was, if we could do anything to help ourselves in attaining eternal life, we would not need a God and Saviour.

The man responded saying that he had been following the commandments ever since he was a child so what did he still lack. And Jesus said to him, “If you would be perfect, go, sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.”

WOW! What a bold statement!

It’s not just about doing good and noble works. It’s not even about following commandments, because today they have become the moral code of conduct to live by in a society or community. A large number of people follow most of the commandments and teach their children to do the same. Don’t lie, don’t rob, don’t kill, don’t wrongly testify against somebody, honour your parents; all these are important but today they have been reduced to mere moral values.

What I am conveying here is that without a personal relationship with the One who gave these commandments to you, and following them for any other reason than because you love the One who gave them to you is just following a rule book and trying to stay out of trouble.

The most important thing Jesus said to the young man was, let go of everything and come follow me. It’s about following Jesus.

Following does not mean aimlessly walking behind someone. It’s a tedious process. It involves following closely so you are on the same path as the one you are following so you reach the same destination. It’s about maintaining the same pace. Walking when He walks, stopping when He stops and waiting where He waits. Imitating every action. One of my most favourite scriptures is Matthew 9: 27, “when Jesus departed from there, two blind men followed Him.” I have always wondered how they managed to do that, given their physical handicap. I have come to realize that following Jesus is a more spiritual journey than physical. It is not by sight but by faith.

The Bible says in John 3:16, “For God So loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him shall not die but have eternal life.” The answer is simple, believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved. Only Jesus can save you from your sin, heal your sickness and give you life eternal.
